Google Home Assistant Integration – A Quick Setup Guide

Home Assistant is an incredibly powerful home hub. But Home Assistant becomes even more powerful when you integrate Google Assistant and Google Home!

When you integrate your Home Assistant with Google, you unlock the power to control your home with your voice and get full access to your Home Assistant devices on your Google Nest Hub. Your lights, blinds, thermostat, washer, dryer, garage door opener, smart locks, and more are just a voice command away!

This step-by-step guide will show you how to set up a secure connection between your Google Assistant or Google Home and Home Assistant. Let’s get to it.

Create A Secure Connection For Google

Google Assistant must connect to your Home Assistant to send commands and read device status. Since your Home Assistant controls your entire home and holds your private information, it’s essential to use a secure and private setup.

Homeway.io is perfect for your Home Assistant and Google integration. Homeway has a “no-setup” Google Assistant integration with Home Assistant. Instead of the user needing to create Google developer services, set up Home Assistant, and manage security keys, Homeway does all of that for you.

Use the button below to set up Homeway now; it only takes about 20 seconds.

Once you have Homeway set up and your account linked, return here for the rest of the Google integration steps.

Configure The Google Home App

Once Homeway is set up, you need to connect your Google Home with Home Assistant. You will need the Google Home app for iOS or Android to do that.

Open the Google Home app and tap “Devices” on the bottom bar. Next, tap “Add” in the bottom left. Tap “Works with Google Home” to see all services that support Google Home. Finally, search the list for Homeway, tap it, and follow the simple instructions to log in.

Assign your Home Assistant devices to Google Home

Once you’re logged in and connected, Google Home will discover all of the devices you have set up with Home Assistant and list them all. Google Home needs a little bit of information for each device to know how to map it to the home and rooms set up in Google Home.

If you don’t want to do this now, you can dismiss the device setup screen. You can always find all devices not fully set up with your Home at the bottom of the “Devices” tab in the Google Home app.

Handling New Devices Added To Home Assistant

When you add a new device to Home Assistant, Homeway will automatically detect it and update Google Home to include it. You will find the new device at the bottom of the “Devices” tab in the Google Home app. To set up the device, tap the device and then the gear icon to assign it to a home and room.

You’re Done!

That’s it! To integrate Google with Home Assistant, you simply need to install Homeway and link your Homeway account to Google Home. It couldn’t be any easier.

The best part of Homeway is that it creates and maintains a secure and private connection to your Home Assistant, unlike other methods where you might need to expose your Home Assistant to the public internet or manage all of your private security keys with Google. Exposing your Home Assistant to the public internet is not secure, and it should never be done.
