I’m extremely excited to write the first blog post for Homeway. Homeway is a dream I have been building for the last six months, and I’m so excited to share it with the Home Assistant community.
Homeway is a new, free, secure, and private remote access solution for Home Assistant. There are many ways to set up remote access for Home Assistant, but they all lack something.
- Nabu Casa
- Exposes your entire Home Assitant server to the public internet, which is a security risk.
- It’s pricy at $6.50 per month.
- TailScale, CloudFlare Tunnels, WireGuard, VPNs
- Requires a constant VPN connection and needs to be set up on any device using remote access.
- Doesn’t support Alexa and Google Assistant integrations.
- It can be tricky to set up correctly.
- Requires maintenance.
Homeway is different
Secure And Private
First and foremost, Homeway’s primary focus is security and privacy. I have created a strict security and privacy stance that Homeway lives by. Unlike Nabu Casa, Homeway does not expose your Home Assistant server to the public internet. To get remote access to your Home Assistant using Homeway, you must be logged into your Homeway account. We also offer advanced account security to keep you secure.
Free Forever
I want Homeway to be accessible to the entire Home Assistant community. Thus, it needs to be free. My goal with Homeway is for any average Home Assistant user to use Homeway 100% for free. If you’re a power user, you can support the Homeway project for only $2.50/month and get power user features. Homeway is 100% community-supported, so all of the support funding goes back into the development, server costs, and community efforts.
Easy To Setup – No Maintenance Required
Technology that “just works” is so critical for everyone. Our lives are so busy we don’t have time to micro-manage a million different little servers to keep them updated, running, and secure. Homeway is extremely easy to set up; install our add-on and link your account. You then have instant remote access, one-click Alex and Google Assistant integration, and Home Assitant app support. You never have to worry about keeping the remote connection active, keeping up-to-date for critical security fixes, or anything – Homeway does that all for you.
Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant Integrations
Setup Alexa or Google Assistant is just as easy and secure as Homeway’s remote access. Our one-click setups instantly enable Alexa or Google Assistant to access your Home Assistant devices for voice control or smart home display monitoring. The connection to the assistant is secure and private, and Homeway manages it, so you don’t have to worry about anything.
Official Home Assistant iOS and Android App Support
You always have secure and private remote access via any web browser on any device. You can also use the official iOS or Android Home Assistant apps to enable location-based events, push notifications, widgets, and more. The app remote access can be set up super easily; follow the guide on our website.
The Start Of Something New
I’m building Home Assistnat for the Home Assistnat community and hope to grow a community around Homeway as well. We have already started building our community with the 500+ beta testers of Homeway, who have been using Homeway daily for remote access, Alexa and Google Assistant voice control, and more.
