What Are Passkeys?
Passkeys are a new web technology standard created by the FIDO group. They are a complete replacement for username-and-password-based login systems, making logging in faster and more secure. From a user perspective, Passkeys allow you to access your account with a simple click of a button!
Passkeys For Home Assistant
Homeway gives you the ultimate remote access solution for Home Assistant, providing full remote access without exposing your Home Assistant to the public internet. That means your remote Home Assistant access is protected by both:
- Your Homeway account login
- Your private Home Assistant login
With passkeys enabled on your Homeway account, signing in to Homeway becomes faster, easier, and more secure.
The Passkey Technology
Passkeys are an authentication protocol backed by strong client-side cryptographic security. They are the most secure and easiest way to log in to a website. It’s a win-win for users!
Under the hood, the Passkey FIDO Alliance WebAuthn protocol is doing a lot of work. It provides a framework that allows your browser, operating system, password manager (like 1Password, Bitwarden, LastPass, etc), or biometric system (Face ID, Touch ID, Windows Hello, Android biometrics, etc) to communicate with a web server in a secure and trusted way. Due to this, Passkeys eliminate many common hacker tricks to gain access to user accounts, such as:
- Email phishing – Since the Passkey is bound to the server’s domain name, phishing attacks that create fake but real-looking websites will not work.
- Weak Passwords & No Two Factor Auth – Passkeys handle the complete and secure cryptography without the user even knowing it, so there’s no user input required, which is a common weakness of username and password systems.
- Automatic Credential Roaming – Since Passkeys are handled by your operating system or password manager, they automatically and securely roam between your devices.
